The VisAble Scientific Calculator was
designed for students, instructors, scientists, engineers and other
professionals who want the convenience of a large display, large keypad
desktop scientific calculator. Most notably, users with visual impairments
or hand targeting or other metoric impairments.
Testing at the University of Waterloo’s
Centre for Sight Enhancement has determined that the VisAble’s unique
large display and keypad corresponds to the approximate size of a 10M near
acuity letter. It exceeds the requirements of a distance acuity of 6/90 or
20/300. The VisAble, Low Vision Scientific Calculator’s display was found
useable by over 97% of low vision users.
The user requires no specific training for
the use of the VisAble; if the user knows how to use a regular calculator,
they can use the VisAble. The VisAble can perform all major scientific,
statistical, trigonometric functions.
There is tactile reference on the 5 key. In
addition, the material on the keys was specially selected for easy
adherence of customized markers or labeling such as Braille equivalent,
tactile numbers etc.
The keys are designed to require a positive
input for the stroke to be registered. This avoids accidental keystrokes
for a person employing some tactile orientation and provides feedback that
a stroke has been inputted.
Tech notes: The VisAble weighs 14 ounces.
The numerals are 0.9 X 0.6 inches. The keys are 0.7 inches high. The
dimensions of the VisAble are 9 X 6.2 X 1.5 inches. The life of the battery
is approximately five years.
