Kurzweil 3000 is a computer-based reading tool
that helps people with reading or learning difficulties increase their reading
speed and comprehension.
Kurzweil 3000 can read virtually any scanned
document or other electronic file on your computer or the Internet, using a
high-quality synthetic speech.
Plus, with Kurzweil 3000, words are highlighted
in a contrasting color to the reading unit making tracking easier. New or
unfamiliar words can be defined using Kurzweil 3000's electronic dictionary,
or broken down into syllables using the syllabification tool.
The Kurzweil 3000 user interface can now be
adapted to a wide range of reading levels, disability levels and individual
learning styles. The choices can be saved and made available for specific
students each time they log on.
The new Kurzweil 3000 Server makes it possible
for students to be centrally logged on or off while retaining their individual
preference settings. The server can also be used to send messages to specific
students on the network. Usernames and related settings can be changed
instantly, without shutting down the program, as students move on and off
workstations.
Along with the new network capabilities comes
the ability to track the activities of multiple. Educators can now obtain a
profile of students' use of the Kurzweil 3000 and monitor its effect on
reading performance.
The study skills tools just got more powerful -
now users can hear what they highlight for review and reinforcement prior to
using the extract feature to separate the highlighted text into a new
document.
Students can now create voice notes of up to two
minutes in length.
Presenting words by separating their component
syllables can be a powerful teaching tool, but can be confusing when words
have more than one pronunciation. The new syllabification addresses this by
allowing for alternative pronunciations.
Students can enter existing documents to train
the word prediction system to recognize the language they currently use in
their classes. Subject-specific words and unique proper names can be
automatically entered into the word predictor's vocabulary.
The Kurzweil 3000's multisensory enhancements
are now augmented by an increased range of pastel background colors which
reduce contrast to enhance recognition of text. Also, this feature is now
available on both black and white images and text files.
In addition to English, you can now scan, read
(scanned text as well as web sites), and define words Spanish, French, German,
Italian, and Dutch at no extra cost. Allows students to read in the language
they are learning and see and hear definitions in their native language.
Enhanced form filling automatically finds the
blanks in scanned tests and creates fields in which students can enter
responses. Now students can more easily complete work on the Kurzweil 3000 to
be returned to teachers in print or electronic form.
It has quick and easy control of the distance
between words for users who benefit from increasing visual text separation.
It also allows concurrent scanning of two facing
pages in smaller books such as paperbacks - cuts page turning and
repositioning in half.
The Kurzweil 3000 now includes Jane, the latest
in the new generation of the RealSpeak family of human sounding synthesized
voices. Jane speaks in a clear, accurate and authentically British-English
accent.
